Annually on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States Thanksgiving is celebrated. It is a traditional North American holiday, which is a form of harvest festival to express gratitude for the things one has at the end of the harvest season.
On December 4, 1619, a group of 38 English settlers arrived at Berkeley Hundred. The group's charter required that the day of arrival be observed yearly as a "day of thanksgiving" to God and Captain John Woodleaf did as required.
In November 1863 President Abraham Lincoln, proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day, to be celebrated each year on the final Thursday of this month. Since then, Thanksgiving has been observed annually in the United States.
