Each May Tay-Sachs Awareness Month is observed.
Childs with Tay-Sachs disease seem healthy at birth, and for a few months appear to be developing normally. The first symptoms generally appear at six months. Some of the most common symptoms include a slowing down of development. Gradually, these kids lose motor skills and mental functions. Later on, the child becomes blind, deaf, mentally retarded, paralyzed and non responsive to the environment usually dying by age five.
Babies with Canavan disease seem to be healthy but between three and nine months of age visual inattentiveness or an inability to grasp objects, roll over and perform other motor tasks start to appear. This eventually lead for the children to become blind, but hearing remains sharp, so that affected children continue to respond to the voices of their caregivers. As the child grows symptoms include weak muscles that keep children from sitting or crawling, seizures and eating problems. Children with Canavan disease usually die in infancy or early childhood.
