October 18 to 26, 2008 is Red Ribbon Week. The Theme for this year campaign is “STEP IT UP: A Call to Action!”
This campaign focuses on raising awareness about the importance of drugs and violence prevention. It was started by the family of Enrique Camarena, a DEA agent that was kidnapped and killed in Mexico while working on a secret mission to discover a drug cartel that involved politicians and the army.
The family started to wear a red ribbon in order to honor Camarena and his battle against illegal drugs.
