Purim is a Jewish holiday which takes place on March. It is celebrated annually on the 14th day of the Hebrew month of Adar, the day following the victory of the Jews over their enemies.
Purim commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people of the ancient Persian Empire from Haman's plot to annihilate them. Jewish exiles who had been living in the Babylonian captivity found themselves under Persian rule when Babylonia was conquered by the Persian Empire. Haman, royal vizier to King Xerxes, planned to kill the Jews, but his plans were foiled by Esther, queen of the Persian Empire in the Hebrew Bible.
Like Hanukkah, Purim has more of a national than a religious character. Its status as a holiday is on a lesser level than those days ordained holy by the Torah. Accordingly, business transactions and even manual labor are allowed.
