National Adoption Month is celebrated each year in November.
Adoption is the legal act of permanently placing a child with a parent or parents other than the birth, or "biological", mother or father.
National Adoption Month is an important step to raise awareness about the adoption of children from foster care. The celebration was created in 1976 by the then governor of Massachusetts, Michael Dukakis, who announced an Adoption Week for his state. Later that same year President Gerald Ford proclaimed that Adoption Week would be celebrated nationally. As more and more states started to participate in this event, 1990 National Adoption Week became National Adoption Month.
