Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) is organized by The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). This celebration is held each year during the first full week of October.
MIAW was established by Congress in 1990 now in order to raise mental illness awareness through outreach programs, promote early detection and accurate diagnosis of, and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness.
Real recovery from mental illness requires community action, understanding, and teamwork. Recovery is possible because of improved science, better community supports, and reduced stigma.
